MEMORIAL DU SOUVENIR

( the war museum of the operation DYNAMO )

Of May 26 to June 4, 1940, the operation DYNAMO (code-name of the plan put to the point May 20 in the castle of Douvres by the Ramsay admiral) had for goal the evacuation of the British expeditionary body (and of the French army)
 1940-Dunkirk. The English oppose to the embarking of the last French that had just protected their retirement
recovered surrounded by the Wehrmarcht around the harbor of Dunkerque. This operation was the last hope of an evacuation toward the Great Britain. Germans became main of the city June 4, 1940. The operation DYNAMO lasted 9 days and permitted the evacuation besides of 330 000 fighters.

The museum of the operation DYNAMO situated in the local of the bastion 32 to the west of the beach of Dunkirk close to the contemporary art museum, held by the voluntary, has for goal to make visitors discover vestiges of this incredible operation and to keep some so the memory of one of the big events of World War II.

The operation Dynamo lasted officially of May 27 to 18H57 until June 2 to 23H30 after the departure of the last contingent of British but the rotation of ships continued until June 4. 227000 British, 123000 French, 16000 Belgians and Dutchmen passed in England. On close to 1000 boats (of the simple yacht to ships of war) committed, the operation will have cost the loss of 243 ships

After the operation, the beach of Dunkerque was cluttered of material. June 4 the Germans took position in the city and hoisted their flag toward 10 hours on the lighthouse.

After the operation, Dunkerque was only a dominated ruin field by Jean Bart.

A new room has been distributed in 2005 with projection of movies

New 2008, parked in front of the war museum a cannon Schneider of 1939 , 90 mm in diameter, 6 m in length, 5.7 tons.

The memorial of the memory is opened every day of April 1st to September 30.
